 Properties and typical application
Chemically active iron (Fe) is a lustrous, malleable and ductile metal with a greyish tinge and important magnetic properties.

Iron is one of the most common elements on earth (about 5% of the earth´s crust) and is existent in four distinct crystalline forms. Iron is an essential element for all forms of life; about 4 grammes of iron is contained by each human circulating in blood (hemoglobin) in order to transport oxygen.

Iron is extracted from iron ore; it is hardly found in free elemental state, but typically part of magnetite and hematite (amongst others).

Iron is used for various alloys, first to mention steel. As a consequence of iron oxidising easily, various methods of improving iron are used in industrial processes. Most of these processes, as galvanisation or coating, just to mention a few, are of environmental impact.

 Toxicology
According to the guidlines of the World Health Organisation, iron is not of health concern at concentrations normally observed in drinking-water.

Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC) of the European Union limits the concentration to not more than 0.2 mg/l iron for potable water.

Ground water may contain iron at a concentration of several milligrams per litre that causes a red-brown colour of water on exposure to atmosphere, below 0.3 mg/l iron there is no specific taste noticable.

Iron can cause damages to health both in case of deficiency and overdose. Symptoms for possible deficiency of iron are, amongst others, fatigue and asthma. High blood pressure, arthritis, heart and liver diseases can be indicators of iron overdoses.

 Method
The concentration of iron is based on a colourimetric method.

After a reduction to Fe(II) ions in mineral acidic solution, iron ions form a dark red complex with 1,10-Phenantrolin. The intensity of the resulting colour is depending on the concentration of iron ions.

The complex coming into existence is very stable and can be evaluated by the use of a photometer unit.

 Joseph von Eybler
Joseph Leopold Edler von Eybler was born on February,8th 1765 in Wien/Schwechat. He received first music lessons from his father Leopold, who was a school teacher and choirmaster. At the age of six, he attended Wiener Stadtseminar and was educated by Josef Haydn.

Joseph Eybler was not able to finish his studies of jurisprudence and had to work as private tutor and musician. With support of Josef Haydn he became choirmaster at Schottenkloster in Vienna in 1794. In 1804 he was promoted deputy bandmaster at the Royal Court.

In 1806 he married one of Maria Theresia´s valets, Theresia Müller. In 1824 he followed Antonio Salieri as Royal Bandmaster. Ten years later he was ennobled by Maria Theresia. Joseph Leopold Edler von Eybler died in 1841 at the age of 81 in Vienna.

Prominent works by Joseph Eybler:
  • Two oratorios ("Die Hirten bey der Krippe zu Bethlehem", "Die vier letzten Dinge")
  • More than 30 masses
  • A clarinet concerto in B flat major
  • A string trio
  • A strong quartett
  • 2 symphonies
