 „1 + 1 = 1 or The benefits of Known Addition”
The new generation of measurement equipment by SEIBOLD-Messtechnik supports the method of
"Known Addition" for various applications, allowing for measurement results of highest accuracy
in complex matrices to be guaranteed.

Existence of interfering ions in a sample to be measured is referred to as complex matrix. Complex matrices cause conditions difficult to cope, specifically with measuring various elements by the use of an ion selective electrode.

Complex matrices tend to influence the sample to be measured and thus limit the accuracy of measurement achievable. SEIBOLD-Messtechnik, specialised in continuous online measurement of various waters and liquids, now uzilises the method of Known Addition
successfully, to cope this problem.

One of the possible applications for instance is measurement of the concentration of cyanide (CN-) in industrial wastewaters. Cyanide in general is a difficult to measure element due to its sensibility in case of existence of interfering ions. Another application is measurement of manganese (Mn) with various wet-chemical methods, where the lowest measurement range of 0.05 to 2 mg/l has to be provided constantly with the highest accuracy possible.

The method of Known Addition allows for calculating the actual measurement result based on the values derived form defined series of measurements. In a first step the sample is measured as provided directly out of the process. Then, the sample is added a solution with known concentration and further measurements are carried out. The actual concentration can finally be calculated at highest precision form the results of both measurements performed so far.

The (standard) solution to be used for measurement of the concentration does not require any specific preperation and can be used with SEIBOLD-Analysers as shipped. Additionally, contact of personnel operating the analysers with the liquid sample to be measured is reduced to a minimum.

It has been verified in comprehensive test series, that automated calibration is an expedient extension to the use of Known Addition. Automated calibrations allows for taking various effects into consideration when calculating the actual measurement result, for example the extent of ageing of the ion selective electrode used.

Combining the method of Known Addition and automated calibration, as provided with the new generation of SEIBOLD Online-Analysers, ensures measurement results of highest accuracy and repeatability. What in the past was only possible with the extensiv support of laboratories, can now be achieved by the use of the new generation of measurement equipment offered by SEIBOLD-Messtechnik.
